In March 2003, Cuban state police arrested 75 pro-democracy activists, human rights leaders, journalists and independent librarians in an incident that became known as the “Black Spring.” The 75 were sentenced to decades in prison for their nonviolent opposition to the communist Castro regime.
It would become one of the largest political crackdowns in Cuba since the communist-led revolution of 1959.
